The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has intensified efforts to contain the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) through a series of targeted livestock roadblock operations across the province. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen animal health management, improve livestock movement control, and protect the agricultural economy from the impact of disease outbreaks.

A key objective of the programme is to prevent the transmission of FMD, one of the most significant diseases affecting cloven hoofed animals, including cattle, sheep and goats. Officials are conducting inspections of livestock transport vehicles, verifying health certificates and ownership documentation, and ensuring compliance with legal movement requirements. These measures are designed to reduce the risk of infected animals entering auctions, markets and disease free areas.

The department is also reinforcing livestock traceability systems by recording animal movement data, checking identification marks, and confirming ownership records. Improved traceability enables authorities to respond more rapidly to potential outbreaks, supports disease surveillance efforts, and helps curb illegal livestock movements that can undermine biosecurity controls.

Alongside enforcement activities, the department is conducting extensive awareness campaigns to educate farmers, transporters and traders on the symptoms, risks and prevention of foot-and-mouth disease. Stakeholders are receiving guidance on biosecurity practices, quarantine procedures, disease reporting protocols, and responsible livestock movement. These engagements aim to strengthen compliance and encourage greater collaboration between government and the farming community.

The combined approach of enforcement, monitoring and education reflects Gauteng's commitment to safeguarding its livestock sector and reducing disease related losses. Livestock production remains a vital contributor to food security, rural livelihoods, and economic stability, making effective disease prevention a strategic priority for the province.

Officials noted that continued vigilance is essential, as FMD outbreaks can spread rapidly and result in significant financial losses if not detected and contained early. Through enhanced surveillance, stricter movement controls and ongoing stakeholder engagement, Gauteng is working to build a more resilient livestock industry while maintaining confidence in animal trade and market systems.

The province's ongoing efforts demonstrate a proactive and coordinated approach to FMD control, with authorities seeking to protect farmers, strengthen animal health systems, and support long term agricultural growth and sustainability.
